Transition Assistance Advisors

Picture
The purpose of the Transition Assistance Advisor (TAA) program is to provide a professional in each state/territory (some states have two TAAs) to serve as the statewide point of contact to assist Servicemembers in accessing Veterans Affairs’ health care services and benefits. Each TAA also provides assistance in obtaining entitlements through the Military Health System and access to community resources. The TAA initiative started in May 2005 when the National Guard Bureau (NGB) signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The TAA program is staffed by 60 contract positions and four federal technicians.

We help you navigate through the numerous benefits and entitlements in the DoD and VA system. We take the time to assist you and not toss you into the “800 number desert!” We will educate you so you will understand the benefits you have earned, such as:

  • Guard entitlements and access for health care in both the DoD and VA medical facilities.
  • TRICARE benefits while you are on active duty and when you return as an OIF/OEF Veteran.
  • Important deadlines that require your action while still on active duty and as a Veteran so you do not miss these time-sensitive opportunities.
  • VA dental care programs (time-sensitive benefit).
  • Referral for counseling services for you and your family that will not affect your career.
  • Referral for possible compensation for injuries or illness sustained in OEF and OIF.
  • Insurance information such as SGLI, TSGLI, FSGLI.
  • Rehabilitative care management needed to help you return to a normal lifestyle.
  • Assistance with job search and connection with ESGR for rights of employment.
  • Assistance in connecting you to the Veterans Benefits Administration and Veterans Services Organizations to file disability/compensation claims.
  • Assistance in the event of financial hardship, health care issues, or unemployment needs.
  • Assistance with locating your medical records, DD 214s and other needed documents.

Rocky Mountain Human Services

Operation TBI Freedom (OTF) is a 100% privately funded program of RMHS, assisting veterans and active duty military personnel (collectively referred to as “veterans”) with service-related traumatic brain injuries (TBI) that occurred on, or after, September 11, 2001. More than 5,000 military personnel with a TBI will return to Colorado in the next three years. Our program tailors a unique plan for each client that promotes optimum independence, productivity and successful reintegration into civilian life.

Each veteran is assigned a Military Support Specialist (MSS) who is a veteran and Certified Brain Injury Specialist. The MSS begins with a comprehensive analysis of the veteran’s needs and concerns. It is the responsibility of the MSS to use all resources – the Veterans Administration, local government programs and private service providers – as efficiently as possible, ensuring no duplication of effort. OTF analyzes complex VA benefits, identifies potential benefit enhancements, and assists the veteran in maximizing his or her access to healthcare and other benefits. OTF has leveraged more than $5.5 million in services and therapies through our partnerships with military and community organizations, serving approximately 700 veterans, and with a current capacity of 250 veterans.

Services provided or coordinated by OTF include the following:
  • Comprehensive needs evaluation
  • Food, housing & other emergency needs
  • 24/7 crisis management
  • Mental health counseling
  • Medical care
  • Benefit assistance
  • Relationship and parenting classes
  • Employment readiness, training, placement and support
  • Assistive technology devices
  • Mentoring
  • Peer support groups (veterans & spouses)

Homes for All Veterans (HAV) addresses homelessness for veterans throughout Colorado with funding from the Veterans Administration. Since the beginning of the program in November 2011, HAV has transitioned 174 households from homelessness to permanent housing, diverted 122 households from homelessness, and provided supportive services to 340 very low-income veteran families.

A housing risk assessment occurs upon entry into the program to direct RMHS’ Veteran Support Specialists (VSS) to the right level of housing support. Veterans with immediate shelter needs are placed in emergency housing. Simultaneously, the VSSs begin seeking housing opportunities available on a transitional or permanent basis while identifying issues and concerns that are contributing to the veteran’s homelessness. Veterans who will benefit from a high level of support, such as those who are chronically homeless or have substance abuse issues, are placed into transitional housing or supported permanent housing. HAV has had great success with this “housing first” approach for chronically homeless veterans; appropriate housing produces remarkable recovery and stabilization in men and women with serious mental health, substance abuse and other issues. Our goal is to place each veteran into stable, healthy, permanent housing, with or without supports, depending upon the veteran’s needs.

Qi Dong

Picture
Zhineng Qi Gong is a deeply meditative practice to heal the body, mind and spirit, while bringing us into balance with nature. It is a self-healing practice that works to overcome unhealthy mental and physical habits. Zhineng Qi Gong emphasizes maintaining a balanced, stable and centered state of mind. This state brings health, happiness and harmony to us and those around us.

My name is Jake Ellison and I have called Denver home for over 20 years. I have been practicing Zhineng Qi Gong for over two years. Since the first time I learned Zhineng Qi Gong I immediately connected with the practice and found it to be a peaceful and powerful discipline. I found that it quickly and effectively helped me to manage everyday stress and several autoimmune diseases I was experiencing at the time. I recently spent nearly a year studying and practicing intensively with several Masters in China and found that my interest and passion for Zhineng Qi Gong grew. I'm excited to be able to share what I've learned with my fellow Coloradans.

ASI is committed to employing responsible people. Our mission is to empower our employees to succeed within a challenging a fun-filled environment, to enhance the quality of life by investing and supporting community services, organizations and activities.

Our goal to support vets is evident in not only our management staff, but in the field also. Out of a management staff of 22, 6 of our staff are military vets. Our field office also supports approximately one third of the 600 employees as military vets.

Our military presence in the field has been a major factor in individual growth and development. This is evident by a strong presence of our supervisors and leaders being military vets.

ASI pledges to give our managers and supervisors the tools they need to effectively manage those employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve.

ASI has received a Statement of Support by the Department of Defense for recognizing our Guardsmen, Reservist and Veterans. We appreciate the value, leadership and skills that service members bring to the workforce and will take every opportunity to hire Veterans.

ASI has participated in several job fairs sponsored by the Workforce Centers specifically addressing the Veteran job market. We have sat on panels sponsored by the Workforce Centers that specifically has goals of hiring Veterans.

In a Leadership Aurora class, one of our management staff was instrumental in assisting Vets in rebuilding their lives and built the Aurora Veteran’s Home. This was a grant from Aurora Mental Health and revitalized the home with everything from paint, beds, food, sofas, nightstands, coffee tables, tv’s, kitchen supplies, linens, towels, toiletries, etc.

ASI made a donation to the Fisher House Foundation. Through support and donations the Fisher House was able to continue to have a positive impact on the quality of life of our military service men and women and their loves ones.
